In a PBS presentation, issues of social networking have been discussed and shown through examples of adolescents from a high school in New Jersey. Social networking has affected many students and can range from mild to extreme cases. One issue social networking has created is the disconnection between the user and their family. Being active online, leaves no room to communicate with family members or spent time with family. Although the internet gives freedom in that it gives people platform to be themselves and interact with its virtual community, it can be harmful to users of the internet. Users who abuse this freedom, end up posting pictures that are suggestive or obscene. This can be detrimental to those applying to jobs currently or in the future. Having those photos can lower chances of getting a job of their choice because those pictures will stay on the internet forever since it leaves a digit footprint.

In terms of safety, the internet is dangerous if not informed of dangers. Social networking can attract unwanted predators. Usually they would message and asks to meet up. On the other hand, with social networking, users can end up being victims of cyberbullying. An example from the presentation is a young boy who was bullied in school and when his father bought him a computer, he is then bullied at home. He goes to a social networking site his classmates use and often spent time on it. Often times, when it is too much, victims turn to suicide as a solution, such as this boy. His father found out later on, that the social networking online amplified the pain and suffering the boy was going through.

In campaigning for presidency, former president Barack Obama's campaign team used several methods and implication of social networking tools. He had a website, www.my.barackobama.com, that aided him in a successful win. From the beginning, he used community building tools in a strategic way such as text messaging, phone tools, and web capacity. Obama’s campaign was able to raise money for advertisement and attracted people to participate through his site. Obama’s campaign used networking to their advantage creating a interaction between the campaign and the people. His site had logged a million users accounts which help bring people and bring 75,000 local events. Text message was used at the Obama rallies where attendees were asked to text their contact information to the campaign.

The Obama campaign was strategic in using social networking, by creating a central network and using that as a main platform of the campaign. This allowed his competitors to lose because their social network was not maintained properly and was not emphasized in their campaign. For example, republican Ron Paul’s campaign used social networking as a hub for what the organizers were doing. He did not manage it well and so it was not very effective for his campaign. As for the Obama campaign, they went further and made their network stronger by merging the data on their website with more information about the users such as who is eligible to vote or if they had voted in the past.

In an article, mind control and internet, it discusses technology helping people physically through biomedical technology and the internet. The article mention Michael Chorost, a person with a biomedical technology. He uses a brain computer interface, the kind of BCI implanted in his brain. He talked how he believed that information is knowledge and facts are intelligent and Google’s search engine is just that. However, many just think that it is an algorithms that gives an answer when it is asked. Google algorithms have tailored its search results to individuals. If both people were to search something, they would not exactly get the same result. There is no longer a standard, this results in allowing users to straighten their world views, ideology and assumptions.

In the TED talk, Eli Pariser talks about the filter bubble. This filter bubble, it depends on who you are and what you do. Google is not just the only website that controls the flow of information, there are many other website that do the same. He said that when the internet came about, it's suppose to connect people, however, that isn't what we were seeing. The internet shows us what it thinks we want to see but not necessarily what we want to see. As an example, he talks about his experience with Facebook. He is frequent user of Facebook who likes to read and interact with this friends post. Without consent, Facebook started to edited out conservative links on his newsfeed because he started clicking more on his friends liberal links. Another issue is that you don't get to see what is edited out.
